Chapter 8: Humility

Executive Summary

Pride hides from the consciousness of leaders behind a mask of overconfidence. Overconfidence isn’t just annoying to followers. It is dangerous for leaders. Overconfidence amplifies the temptation to fall in love with our ideas and become rigid in our perspective. Overconfidence whispers into an echo chamber of subconscious thought, You’re really smart, really good at what you do, and almost always right. The universal antidote for hubris is humility. Never has there been a more powerful role model of leadership humility than Jesus. The leadership mindset of Jesus informs how we relate to status, service, sacrifice, and success.

“The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that.”
~ Luke 22:25–26

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
~ John 13:14–15
